Degrees in Multimedia Design

Requirements for Earning Multimedia Design Degrees

The concept of multimedia is as simple as deconstructing the word itself; “media” means the avenue –weather through television or film, audio or animation, or any number of other realms – by which a message is transmitted, while “multi” is in reference to more than one of those different forms being used simultaneously. Examples of multimedia design degrees include a Bachelor of Science or two-year Associate of Ccience in web design and interactive media, or various Bachelor of Arts options as well. Students in either program will be expected to have a working understanding of relevant software. Coursework includes website development, design and typography, e-commerce, desktop video, and media law and ethics, among other subject matter.

Average Salary and Career Data

While multimedia designers (namely artists and animators) can expect median annual salaries approaching $59,000, job growth is slower than the average profession, expected to reach just about 8 percent in the decade leading up to 2020. This means that competition will be relatively tough, with entry-level positions closer to $34,000 ( The top 10 percent of the field, however, earn more than $99,800 annually.

Job Duties of a Multimedia Designer/Artist

Multimedia artists use digital illustration methods to create static graphics and dynamic animations. While some multimedia designers may work in the movie, video game, or cartoon animation realm, others may work in such fields as website design, or creating multimedia advertisements for use in a number of platforms.
