Degrees in Graphic Design
Requirements for Graphic Design Degrees
The typical degree in graphic design is often a Bachelor of Science degree, but a Bachelor of Arts and a two-year Associate of Science degree are also available. These programs help students build their collection of tools – namely software – as they move forward with the necessary coursework. Students learn about various computer software programs as well as how to develop digital illustrations and typeset infographics.
Average Salary and Career Data
While the graphic design field is growing at a rate of about 13 percent through 2020 – about as fast as the average profession – the median salary for such positions is approximately $43,500 per year. Many entry-level graphic designers receive starting salaries greater than $26,000, with the top 10 percent of the field earning nearly $77,000 per year (BLS.gov).
Job Duties of a Graphic Designer
Graphic designers must be business savvy in order to determine a client’s marketing needs. They regularly create designs using both free-hand and computerized techniques, combining art and technology to “create visual concepts” and “communicate ideas through images.” Graphic designers often create promotional displays and brochures for their clients in addition to homepage design and custom emails.
